Forty years ago Spain was a fascist dictatorship and America prided itself on being the land of the free. Times they are a-changin’.
Spain is preparing to legalise abortion on demand, thus taking a giant step towards treating woman as human beings with full legal rights. Carmen Monton, spokesperson for the Socialist government (PSOE) says simply: “We respect the right of women to make their own decisions about motherhood.” Which just goes to show that even a country forcibly sunk for decades in the murk of religious and political oppression can do the right thing purely through an act of will.
Americans, take note, because the US is rushing dizzy-doo-lally in the opposite direction. In the wake of California’s Proposition 8 the Vallejo Times Herald wonders aloud if the government didn’t go far enough in merely banning gay marriage, maybe it “should restrict” divorce, too. “The best situation, which is what laws are supposed to be about, is to have a married mother and father.”
Just goes to show that when basic human rights go out the window for one group no one should sleep easy. What’s next, the California Heterosexual Marriage Mandate?
